Faecal Incontinence and Soiling

Faecal incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of faecal matter (solid or liquid) between bowel motions. This may be associated with an awareness of loss, or it may not.

Treatments include:

Physio: pelvic floor exercises
muscle re-education and rehabilitation
biofeedback, including electromyography (EMG)
nerve and muscle stimulation (NMS)
Dietary: dietary modification and advice (consult with dietician)
Medical: constipating agents
other medications (consult Gastroenterologist or GP)
Surgical: a variety of surgical procedures (consult Colorectal Surgeon)
