Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine associated with an increase in the pressure inside the abdomen (increased intra-abdominal pressure).

Leakage occurs with particular activities such as cough, sneeze, laugh, run, jump (especially star-jumps or on a trampoline), and other forms of exercise including sex!

In other words, we are unable to use our muscles correctly or sufficiently to keep the hole closed when we exert pressure from above.

Treatments include:

Physio: pelvic floor exercises
muscle re-education and rehabilitation
biofeedback, including electromyography (EMG)
nerve and muscle stimulation (NMS)
abdomino-pelvic synergy retraining
weighted vaginal cones
sports specific retraining
Medical:

HRT (especially topical oestrogen creams)
others (consult Gynaecologist, Urologist or GP)

Surgical: TVT
a variety of ‘bladder lift’ options (consult Gynaecologist or Urologist)
